The 5th UK Resilience Lessons Digest, ‘Learning to Manage Lessons’ has been published on the EPC website today.

Upon publication, Lianna Roast, Head of Thought Leadership at the EPC said, "Since the first Digest edition in October 2022, we have synthesised more than 1000 lessons – and the reports keep coming. Most notably during production of this fifth edition, the UK Covid-19 Inquiry published its first Module 1 Report, and the Grenfell Tower Inquiry published its final Phase 2 report. We have also seen publication of the UK’s first Lessons Management Best Practice Guidance."

While the inquiry reports and their recommendations are being considered, it seemed timely to look at what their findings reported in terms of the challenges and opportunities in effectively managing lessons. By reviewing key volumes and relevant chapters, we were able to explore the detail of findings on learning challenges preceding the Manchester Arena Attack, the Grenfell Tower Fire, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The analysis revealed five key areas of challenge within the processes associated with effective lessons management. These included:

  • Lesson implementation
  • Lesson identification
  • Lessons systems, strategy and storage
  • Embedding
  • Learning culture

Findings suggest that the need to ‘learn’ lessons extends to learning how to manage them – from the point of experience, right the way through to the longer term embedding of improvements where required. The Lessons Management Best Practice Guidance is encouraging in this regard. However, that guidance cannot learn for us.

Positive, practical guidance that focusses on doing things well only stands to be strengthened by a shared understanding of where things can most commonly go wrong.
