Joan Saunders-Reece - Associate Lecturer at the EPC

Joan is a trailblazing professional with over 35 years of extensive experience in the transport industry. Throughout her career, Joan has developed a deep expertise in emergency planning, incident management, and event management, contributing significantly to major events and critical incidents in London and with other transport providers. Her pioneering contributions and leadership have set new standards in the transport sector. Joan's passionate about sharing her knowledge to ensure organisations are not only prepared, but resilient to deal with every eventuality.

Starting her career as a Guard/Emergency Train Driver with Transport for London, she quickly ascended to break barriers and become the first female train driver on the Victoria Line, as well as the first female Fleet Instructor and first female Emergency Response Manager.

Since then, Joan has played a pivotal role in managing and overseeing key events and major infrastructure projects for London's leading transport provider. Her expertise was crucial during high-profile events such as the London 2012 Olympics, royal weddings, funerals, the Notting Hill Carnival, and New Year's Celebrations. Additionally, Joan has made significant contributions to major engineering initiatives, including the Bank Modernisation Project, the development of the Victoria Underground Station’s North Ticket Hall taking it from a construction site to a fully integrated operational station, as well as the comprehensive redevelopment of Euston Station.

Joan was instrumental in ensuring the London Underground's safe and secure transition to the Night Tube service across four lines and 71 stations, identifying and implementing security solutions for complex stations, establishing suitable staffing levels, and coordinating a series of exercises and workshops. This comprehensive approach ensured that the team was fully prepared to deliver this new service seamlessly.

Outside of work, Joan enjoys sewing, travelling, and collecting antiques from the art deco period.
