Abbeystead Explosion
Gas explosion in an underground water treatment plant at Abbeystead, Lancashire. The gas seeped from the coal deposits underneath the water works where it then found an unknown source of ignition. The subsequent explosion caused massive damage to the site and killed 16 and injured 28. A presentation was with a group of people took place at the time of the explosion which likely lead to a higher number of casualties.
