Mesa Redonda Fireworks Disaster
A fire grew out of control at the Mesa Redonda shopping centre (Lima, Peru) where many firework vendors were selling their goods. Many of the surrounding buildings were made of flammable materials, worsening the effects. The fire started during a firework display where a spark ignited a stockpile of fireworks. The following blaze lasted for many hours, ensuing havoc. Nearly 300 people died and 134 were injured.
