2002 El Ayyat Railway Disaster
An eleven carriage passenger train traveling from Cairo to Luxor caught fire after a gas cylinder in the kitchen carriage exploded reducing seven of the carriages to ash. The driver of the train had no communication with the the carriages and did not realise there was a fire for another 2 hours, all the while people were jumping off the train to avoid fire, often to their deaths. The official death toll is 383, but this thought to be much higher as carriages were thought to have been overcrowded and at least 150 passengers in each and there was improper counting of those on board.
