Kaprun Tunnel Fire
A fire started on board a funicular train in its tunnel, connecting Kaprun to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. The fire broke out after an electric heater onboard overheated. The doors failed to open, the fire spread quickly, causing many fatalities. 12 escaped after breaking the shatter proof windows and followed an off-duty firefighter down the tunnel past the fire; but many others who escaped went higher into the tunnel and were asphyxiated. The death toll reached 155.
